Can you help with Renault Laguna Automatic please?

My dear wife, unused to driving an auto, stopped the car and switched off whilst the transmission in drive. I can't return the car ro Park or Neutral to re-start, and the display is alternately flashing "press brake pedal to shift to P", and "shift lever to P or N". There is something in the handbook about if the lever is jammed in P (remove the gaiter and press unlocking on). I can't find the on, but in any case the car is not in Park. Anyone able to help please?
