What exactly was the Iran-Contra Affair and why was itr a scandal?

Iv heard of the Iran-Contra before but I don't quite understand it, why was it such a scandal?? Everyone knew the U.S. Government was supporting the Contras to overthrow the Sandinista government in the 1980's, so where's the scandal and what was Iran's role in all of it????
