Does the Queen have the right to reject a prime minister-elect?

It's tradition that the British monarch 'invites' the leader of the parliamentary majority to become prime minister and form the next government, but does the monarch have any constitutional discretion to refuse and veto the popular vote? I wonder if this has ever happened......
