Why am I being bombarded by acorns?!?

I'm under attack. My oak trees are out to get me. I've heard that it means a harsh winter, but I need a scientific answer to explain this. I can't find info online on why I have more acorns than gr. My dog is afraid of going under my trees now. Not kidding about that!
